Data leaks could cost companies up to $350 million

Technical investigations, notifications to users, legal activities and recovery of business and reputation: a data breach can bring a flood of tasks for a company that has had its digital security breached. And the Cost of a Data Breach 2018 study released by IBM on Wednesday reveals that all these tasks have a high global average cost: 3.86 million dollars, which can reach up to 350 million dollars depending on the severity of the case.

The study was carried out by the Ponemon Institute based on interviews with almost 500 companies that have suffered attacks, from the smallest to those classified by the company as "mega breaches", which exceed 1 million leaked records.

Globally, the average cost this year was 6.4% higher than last. However, here in Brazil there was a slight improvement, with a 7% drop in costs caused by attacks. The losses per stolen record here are also the lowest in the world: 67 dollars, compared to 148 dollars on average in the countries surveyed.

But that's not necessarily a reason for Brazilians to celebrate. The IBM survey also revealed that, of all the nations that took part in the study, Brazil is the most at risk of a data breach: it has a 43% chance, compared to 27% for the global average. The country is also not the quickest to identify a breach: it still takes 240 days to notice an attack (197 on the global average). Containing it, on the other hand, takes 100 days here and 69 days on the global average.

Mega violations on the rise

The research also noted a considerable increase in the number of breaches that end with more than 1 million records leaked. In 2013, there were nine of them, while in 2017 there were 16. According to the analysis, these attacks are more difficult to detect and contain: companies need a year to resolve these breaches.

The costs are obviously much higher too: an attack that results in the data of 1 million people being leaked costs an average of 40 million dollars. When the records reach 50 million, the figure skyrockets to 350 million dollars. Finally, 10 of the 11 mega breaches analyzed in the study happened thanks to malicious and criminal attacks - hardly any human error.
